Terms of Entry:
- The competition deadline is 15th April 2015 and the winning entries and shortlist will be announced in June 2015. The announcement will appear on our website.
- All entries must be written in Ulster Scots and/or English, and be entirely the author’s own work.
- Work must not have been published before and winners must permit the project team to publish their work online and in hard copy.
- There is a first prize of a Kindle Fire Table, a second prize of £50 book token, and a third prize of £25 book token for each age category.
- Entries can have a maximum of 1000 words for prose/drama and 30 lines for poetry. Longer entries will be disqualified.
- All winners will have their work published, displayed on the Ulster-Scots Education Project’s website and will be invited to read their work at a launch event in June. A selection of all entries will be published online and in hard copy.
- Only one entry per person is permitted.
- The judging panel’s decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into. The judging panel is unable to comment on individual entries.
About the competition:
The competition is designed to encourage a creative response to Ulster-Scots Culture. The writing shall be contemporary in style and may take any literary form including: poetry, prose and drama. The competition asks entrants to take inspiration from the theme “New Beginnings”. Entries can have a maximum of 1000 words for prose/drama and 30 lines for poetry.
The competition is open to all residents of Northern Ireland. There are two categories: under 16 and 16 and over. Entries under 16 must have a parent or guardian’s permission to enter. Work must not have been published before and winners must permit the project team to publish their work online and in hard copy.
The judging panel will consist of members of the Ulster-Scots Education Project team, including the internationally recognised poet, Dr. Kathleen McCracken. Entries will be judged on the following criteria:

Literary Technique
Emotional Engagement
Use of Language
Engagement with Ulster Scots Culture
Language:

The Ulster-Scots Education Project is funded by the Ministerial Advisory Group for the Ulster-Scots Academy (DCAL) and is currently developing a series of learning resources for Ulster-Scots literature, language, history and culture for schools and the public in Northern Ireland.
